Cities Series

This project was proposed to Livraria Cultura - Brazil’s largest bookstore - in March 2014 and was first released in stores in June 2014. The “Coleção Cidades” (Cities Collection), inspired in Brazil and its different regions, draws on familiar themes while trying to move away from cliché representations that predominate the market. This line of designs includes t-shirts and tote bags, which have become some of Livraria Cultura’s top selling items.

são paulo

With nearly 20 million inhabitants, São Paulo is the largest metropolis in Brazil and eighth in the world. Whether looking at the city from above or walking around town, one is easily overwhelmed by the seemingly endless horizon of concrete buildings. This design plays around with repetition to allude to the image of São Paulo as a vast and dense concrete jungle.

NIemeyer's Copan Building

Designed by Oscar Niemayer, one of Brazil’s most celebrated architects, Copan is a beloved architectural landmark. Copan is famous for its diverse occupation - ranging from students and low-income families to wealthy architecture-lovers - and for its unique curvy contour that makes it stand out from the building blocks that surround it.

A city’s roads and avenues are often said to be its veins and arteries, allowing things and people to flow and giving life to the urban complex. Aside from its structural and historical significance, a city’s urban fabric is a unique construction that has an undeniably intriguing aesthetic. In this design, São Paulo’s fingerprint forms the base pattern of the product. A small emblem of the stadium marks its exact location on the map, implying “I was here.”

A coastal city, it is not buildings that define Rio de Janeiro’s character, but its shoreline. This design depicts the city streets that flow into the sea. Continuing with the football theme, the Maracanã, Brazil’s most famous football stadium, is featured on the design.

Psychology

Elephantote

My first-year psychology professor once put up a slide of a man riding an elephant and said it represented our brain. I thought it was a great metaphor and redesigned my own version to print on a bag.

About the metaphor:
The man who (most of the time) is in charge, represents the prefrontal cortex - decision making, problem-solving, planning, higher level cognitive thinking. The elephant is the limbic system, our emotional system. Sometimes the elephant can feel overwhelmingly large and difficult to control, and doesn't always heed to reason.
