Harlem Athletic Center
The Harlem Athletic Center is designed on a large pre-existing pier structure located in the Northwest region of Manhattan. The project was developed around the concept of a single ramp whose shape is determined by the activities that it offers on its path. The ramp is the central circulation axis and wraps around all of the programs of the building. With a total of one kilometer in length, the walk through the integrity of the ramp can be a workout in itself that ends on a beautiful view of the Hudson River at the top of the building. At the center of the project is a large atrium allowing for abundant natural lighting throughout the structure. All the rooms of the Center have a view down this atrium, giving the Olympic-size pool at its base a very central position. Another characteristic of the project is the interactivity of its faÁade, composed of pivoting color blocks, that can be pushed by users, who can then peak through and see the activities that are taking place on the inside. The idea is to make all physical activities and experiences as accessible and inviting as possible.
