greenroof competition
This green roof design entry seeks to redefine the roof of the University of Toronto's Munk building by transforming it into an occupiable, social, and sustainable space.
Standardized modular units are created using the pebbles that already exist on the roof, combined with a wireframe cage. These modular blocks are used to construct a set of steps, on which users can sit and have a coffee, or stand to see the view of the city from higher up. The diagonal design of the steps directs users towards the southern - downtown - view of Toronto.
The structure built from these modular blocks are also used as vessels for a rich selection of plants. Allowing for over 25 cm of soil depth, the roof is able to contain a highly diverse plant habitat. Aside from the preparation of the roofís structure to receive vegetation, only lightweight metal nets and the plant material are added to the roof, thus ensuring the low costs of construction and implementation.
The maintenance of the space involves a simple sprinkler system that operates on a timer. The plants that were chosen are all typical to the oftentimes harsh Canadian landscape and are capable of withstanding cold and dry seasons. The species of tall grass and tall forbs will create a beautiful wall of plants through the spring, summer, and autumn seasons.
